Guinea pig hay is an
essential part of the guinea pig's diet. It provides fiber for intestinal
health, provides valuable nutrients, and allows molars to be ground down over
time. There are several types of hay: timothy, alfalfa, orchard and meadow hay
are the major types.
Timothy hay is the perfect food for guinea pigs. It is perfectly balanced in
nutrients and can be fed in unlimited amounts to all guinea pigs. In fact, you
may find that you can reduce other feeds such as pellets while feeding your
guinea pigs timothy hay.
Alfalfa hay is an ideal treat, but since it is too high in calcium, it may
cause digestive issues such as diarrhea. Alfalfa and timothy hay can be mixed
together for feeding to young guinea pigs or nursing mothers.
Guinea pig hay also serves as excellent bedding. Care must be taken however, to
change it frequently or it may mold over time. Storage of hay before use is
